Personalities of the Culbrea

The Martehiording Clan

Chieftain Roharlont Crookednose

38 years old, this sturdy man has been utterly defaitistic and broken since the Starbrow rebellion two years ago. From being a good warrior and an embodiment of Orlanth he is now most interested in listening to sad ballads dealing with heavy life-conditions. Sometimes he goes hunting in the wilderness where he doesn't have to be confronted with the signs of Lunar occupation. He was deeply shocked to hear what happened with his King, Hofstaring Treeleaper, in the Lunar tents. When all the tribes were forced to hand over their weapons he lost a magic lunar sword which had been in the bloodline's possession since King Tarkalor's reign. Roharlont never wears a sword after that incident. And as a Orlanth Storm Servant he has only sacrificed for weather-oriented Rune Magic since then.

Ernaldesta Varlandsdotter, chieftains wife

Quite the contrary to her husband, Ernaldesta is aggressive and action-oriented to a degree that would never have been tolerated in the Ernalda cult had she been in a higher position. (Since she is married she can't join the Vinga mysteries.) She is quick, swift, sarcastic and often of a bad temper. Often she tries to egg on young men against the Lunars, but that she has to do in secret. Maybe her changed temper is caused by the loss of her only, and then just initiated, son in the 1613 rebellion. He was taken as a slave and no-one knows where he is nowadays. [Modelled after Hallgerd in Njal's Saga.]

Heavy-hooded eyes and thoughts black as the night. Chief Roharlont broods on the fate of the Culbreans.

Housecarl, Wind Lord, and thane Yorsar Swordsong

30 years old. A grim and stern guy who don't talk much. Cold in his character in a unpleasant way. This includes his relations with the opposite sex, with the consequences that he only has had two failed year-wife marriages. He is the best warrior of the clan and is Wind Lord at the Hill of Orlanth Victorious. Also influential at the council of King Galvharst. The leader of the Martehiording fyrd in case of tribal warfare. Among his trophies are a scalp of a Grazelander, spear and matrices from Praxian nomads, a Lunar scimitar, and a Lunar Helmet. [Modelled after Popeye in Faulkner's "Sanctuary".]

Housecarl Killing-Anamor

A bandy-legged, broad man with a burnt face - a memory from an incident in which men from the Rindebarg clan of the Aranwyth burned his family's stead in 1608. Killing-Anamor was saved by the warning-cry of an owl and since that time he has always left a little offering in a hollow tree before he leaves the Owlflight Crest. Over the years he has slain three men of the Rindebarg, one Malani and one Kheldon - so the ground is rather hot under his feet. In spite of this Roharlont made him his housecarl in 1612. Killing-Anamor is a glad fellow, a little bit rowdy though. Especially with too much wine or beer in his stomach. As a result he has been exiled from the Deer Hall Inn for long periods.

Housecarl Saraskos Ear

He is of a wild nature whom the wilderness and fiercest of winds always beckon to. He is trying to restrain himself. But he finds himself in love with the speed and the rush of recklessness - to live a life in the very near vicinity of useless death. He is burning his candle in both ends. He also has the means of living a rich life. Many private treasures makes him sort of a barbaric "playboy". His self-destructive and manic-energetic life-style is just one side of the coin. The other causes him to fall into periods of depressions and self-pity. Sarskos' father was a housecarl as well and fell recklessly against the lunars in 1602. (Temper inherited.) Sarskos once tried to steal a horse from Leika Ballista of the Colymar but she chopped his leg off. He has also slain a Greenhafter but that has been settled. [Modelled after John Sartoris in Faulkner's "Flags in the dust".]

Yorsar Swordsong doesn't talk very much. He is having a real problem with his Wind Lord verses.

High Storm Voice Lightning-Lartemal; highest positioned Storm Voice in Culbrea tribe and "boss" at the Hill of Orlanth Victorious. Lawspeaker at the Martehiording clan council and inner ring

Pompous, thundering and ridiculously serious. He likes to scatter unintelligible allegories around him. Often near to tautological words of wisdom. Appearance: Long hair braided together with the beard. Young girls often get crushes on him, which have resulted in an uncountable number of Year-Wifes.

Storm Voice Ormgerin Asmandsson

More confident and stable than Lightning-Lartemal. Don't like the promiscuous living of the latter. Ormgerin himself has an unshakeable marriage with the Ernalda priestess Minara which have resulted in seven children. Ormgerin takes a middle position between the high-flown and pompous Lightning-Lartemal and the aggressive, almost mad Bjornai.

Storm Servant Bjornai the Dark

In spite of his high age (45) Bjornai is only a Storm Servant. A lack of self-control and unrestrained character hinder any further cult progress. Often makes long tirades about the importance of learning the Power of Death. Very hateful towards the Lunars. Aggressive and high-pitched half-mad but his whimsiness has a quenching effect.

Earth Priestess Minara Leaflaugh

Calculating and economic. A bit dry in her character, but cunning in things religous. Has raised seven children together with Ormgerin. Minara has made a pilgrimage to Wintertop. She was scared by the sights of Maran Gor there. Has been to Boldhome as well.

Tortor Butterbur of Deer Hall Inn and on the Inner Ring as Barntar representative

Proprietor of the little beer-hall at Deer Hall. (To call it an inn would be too great a credit.) Tortor is a cosy but a little distracted character often mumbling to himself. Slow and thoughtful he can be irritated though. Behind this seemingly plain facade hides a very important man. As a Barntar representative he is most influential at the clan's inner ring. In his youth he was a member of Geo and still sends generous donations to Geo's at Jonstown. In his secret and sheltered herbgarden, guarded by aggressive shadow cats, Tortor grows quite unique spices for his various beers and meads. Tortor is an initiate of Orlanth-Barntar, Esrola and Geo.

Voriof (Inner Ring) representative Darrik of Fall Stead

Appearance: twisted moustaches in a wrinkled 60-year old face. Tattoos above eyebrows is a matrix for Farsee 6. A grumbling personality. Caused a minor sensation four years ago, when he married Molene Karesdotter, a beautiful young woman of the Barlamani clan. The couple leads a quite herder-life in contemplation and relative isolation since. His only contact with the clan is as a council member.

Odayala (Inner Ring) representative Rostalos Orldagsson

At the Odayala's Arrow Shrine (and stead) Rostalos, a Master Hunter, lives. 40 years old, he was the Culbrea Great Hunter latest in 1612. He has successfully hunted prey in Heortland, Grazelands and the Vale of Flowers. His greatest trophy is a Triceratops-head adorning the high seat of his stead. Cousin to Tortor Butterbur of Deer Hall Inn, and an often-seen guest at the inn together with his wife. Rostalos has met the Master Hunter of the Sazdorf trolls - Jonakel - whom he holds in a confused respect.

The Culbri Clan

Chieftain Kangharl Askisson

Frank and proper, sometimes a bit too formal.

Martekar the Burley

Cottar. A jovial, happy fellow. Big and strong with a red beard. Naively optimistic in his out-look on life and friends. But if something happens to him or himself he can swiftly become uncontrollably angry and mad. Woodsman and hunter and initiate in Orlanth and Odayala. [Modelled on Razumichin, Crime & punishment.]

Urhar Shortword

A feverish, nervous farmer, who is constantly tormented by a bad conscience and reprisal Wind Fists from Orlanth. Because, two years ago he murdered an old widow (Rovania) of the Barlamani and escaped with a small treasure which he have hidden. No-one knows that he has murdered the widow. [Modelled on Raskolnikov, C & P]

Pellavinar, tribal trickster

Born with high POW. Although only 19 years old, he still has wandered around a lot. Has collected maybe 8 Rune spells or so. Appearance: Grandiose blond forelock and a little red cap on his head. He likes to mistreat various instruments and is a renowned seducer.

The Barlamani Clan

Chieftain Hendrik the Fertile

Almost 50 years old, Hendrik has 14 children.

Tribal King Galvharst Proudeye, Orlanth Storm Servant and Issaries Initiate (35 years)

Succeeded Hofstaring Treeleaper as King after the latter was transported to the Lunar Hell in connection with the failed Starbrow rebellion. It was necessary to choose a more diplomatic king (voice of Issaries) to avoid provoking the victorious Lunars and to avoid too much land-losses. Although Galvharst is a diplomatic, sensible person he is no whimpering jerk. Ten years ago he was in Nochet City and the Holy Country (he still has some cousins left in Kethaela) and he took part in the Building Wall Battle where he lost two fingers and half his left foot. He is a good friend to Apatar the Bold.

The Greenhaft Clan

Chieftain Jost Bronzeside

A tricky, cunning and self-confident person, who, unbeknownst to all, is illuminated. Top Secret!

The Gwandor Clan

Chieftain Kulbrast Offirsson

Incredibly fat, he loves food but can still swing a sword as Harmast Barefoot himself.

Urenstand Bullseye

Has been the Great Hunter of the Tribe for the last couple of years. Urenstand is a rather poor man since the Lunars took his wife and all wordly possessions 1613. Became Great Hunter by capturing a live Sky Bull up in the Quivin Mountains. Urenstand is kind and generous and spends most of his time training tribal members in hunting skills if one succeeds in finding him - he is constantly on the move. Has knowledge of several hidden valleys were rebellious activity take place.

Ligtning-Lartemal out looking for signs from Orlanth. Signs he can then transform into incomprehensible "kennings".

Orgumleide the Sinew. Sword of Humakt and on the Inner Gwandor clan ring

You knew it. Dark in the eyes. Sombre mood. Often silent. Likes to pick a fight. Every child start to cry when near him. Even the cows and sheeps gets nervous and jumpy when Orgumleide is around. A perfect party spoiler. Orlanth knows, how Kulbrast keeps up with him. Maybe because of that fantastic swordswing...

The Stirlgon Clan

Chieftain Orlgandi Twentybeard

Dirty, humorous and a great speaker.

Rodgar of Two-Birch Stead

"The Master Enchanter" . If the PC's want to learn ritual magic, including the skills, they have to go to this man. He is over 60 years old, Godi and Orlanth Storm Servant.

The Varnding Clan

Chieftain Skamkel Headsplitter

Quiet, bitter and easily aroused into aggression since the recent incidents in his hall. Fooled by Tricksters and robbed. Yearn for setting out after the four Tricksters, but his duties as a chieftain hinders him. A widower.

Karendra Thundervoice, Storm Servant and Vingan Woman

A phlegmatic woman with rapid changes in the mood between happiness and sadness. Now and then she is disturbed by visions. She gets random attacks by Second Sight which afterwards gives here a tormenting headache lasting one day and night.

Harnhol Estasson

The son of Esta the Long and Oranda Venharlsdotter. Nearest surviving relative of the recently mysteriously deceased Oranda. Harnhol wonders who is responsible. Often he wanders up on the Vengecairn Walls and is scanning. Otherwise he is on the move among the clans of the tribe and gives folks the "evil eye".

The Elk Clan

Chieftain Borlkar Otkesson

Dour, serious and stiffnecked. But also someone to lean on when you are in a tight spot. A great horseman.
