Summary of the visit in Kouvola

21.11-22.11.1996

To come to Kouvola in Finland from Trelleborg you must take the car, the aeroplane and the train. It takes almost one day to make this journey and we arrived quite tired in the evening on the 20th of November. We are Lennart Larsson, the headmaster at Liljeborgsskolan in Trelleborg, and three teachers,Jan Jönsson, Christina Larsson and Magnus Wikström.

We stayed in Kouvola for two days and the aim for this journey was to visit Eskolanmäki School to see how the Finish school system works.

Almost all day on the 21th of November we visited different classes. It was very nice and the pupils were polite. The pupils in Eskolanmäki School are much more well behaved, and the size of the classes is much smaller than in Trelleborg. We saw some interesting lessons in information technology, and we agreed that this school have more experience in this area than we have in Trelleborg.

In the afternoon we met the other teachers who are involved with the Comenius project, and we discussed different reports, future plans and the next meeting in Trelleborg.

After a very hot sauna at the hotel we went to Vaakuna to participate in a meeting with mathematics teachers, and to have dinner. At the meeting Magnus Wikström made an extremely appreciated performance, as he explained the movement of molecules.

On the 22th of November we went to the Town Office of Education to meet the Chief Education Officer. We also visited a sixth form College and a primary School. Some of the things we saw is different from Swedish condidtions. The grade system and the discipline are much different, for example.

In the evening we were invited to a party. The teachers in Eskolanmäki School had planned it and we ate, danced, talked and we had a really good time.

On the 23 th of November we went back to Trelleborg by train, areoplane and car.

Thank You Kouvola for a pleasant stay!
