"It seemed that everywhere GN'R went, so did the headlines. Turbulent going-on onstage, even wilder behaviour off, the whole capped by the unrestrained exaggerations of a hysterical tabloid press".
1988, Castle Donington: By far the most unfortunate mishap to befall Guns N' Roses was the Incident at the 1988 Castle Donington 'Monsters of Rock' Festival, at which two teenagers, 18-year-old Alan Dick and 20-year-old Landon Siggers, were trampled to death during Guns' performance before a crowd of 107,000. Just before the gig, Duff had expressed the sentiment that, "You're making history if you play Donington." However, the only history made at this perfomance was the most tragic sort. As soon as the band mounted the stage, fans surged forward and crushed audience members in the stampede to the front. Slash delivered an eyewitness account immediately after the show: "It was real scarey... It was kids piled on horizontal on the ground. They were unconscious. And more people kept falling on them. I saw them. It took about 20 minutes to get everybody out. We stopped the show and they finally pulled the last couple of people out and I think they were dead. It was really weird. I saw no life in those bodies at all." 1991, St Louis: Show came to an abrupt halt when Axl tackled a member of the audience who had been giving grief to other fans and then stormed out. The audience rioted, smashing up the theatre and costing a quarter of million dollars worth of damage. About seventy people, fans, security staff and police were hurt. The band lost most of their equipment and had to cancel subsequent concerts. 1991, Los Angeles: Scheduled to play four shows with the Rolling Stones, Axl broke into his performance on the first night to sack drummer Steven Adler for failing to kick his drug habit. It was touch and go whether the shows would go on - in the end, they did. 1992, Los Angeles: Axl was reported to have thumped a businessman who called him a 'Bon Jovi lookalike'. 1992, Chicago: Replacement concerts cancelled
when prosecutor issued a warrant for Axl's arrest. (If you get Metallica's video "A Year and a Half in the Life..." Volume Two, you can see video of the riot and MTV News reports and all that. Thanx to:
Derick Ronhoff who sent
this incident review. 1992, Wembley: Axl stopped the show and had a drunk who was causing mayhem thrown out by security men. 1992, Manchester: Kept 31.000 fans waiting for two hours and were treated to a slow handclap when they did eventually appear. 1992, Colombia: Forced to leave half their crew and equipment behind in Venezuela when military coup closed the capital city's airport; consequently had to cancel one of two shows in Colombia. A minor riot ensued when ticket-holding fans for the show tried to get into the second. Eventually dispersed by police. 1992, Chile: The band's hotel rooms were searched for drugs by the police. 1992, Argentina: Local press called for boycott of the shows and president Carlos Menem threatened cancellation after double suicide of a GN'R fan and her father. 1992, Brazil: Axl questioned by police after he was supposed to have been photographed throwing a chair from his hotel window. Add to the list Axl's very name, a rudie anagram, Izzy taking a well-publicised leak on an airliner, fourletter words on live TV, turning up late for shows or even not turning up at all, being criticised for the apparent sloppiness of the set when they do play, uppsetting virtually every pressure group possible - gays, ethnic, women - with the content and cover of Appetite... Axl charged for breaking a winebottle over a neighbour's head, countless police raids on the band's early hangouts in L.A., Slash and Steven Adler in rehabilitaion clinics... 1993-05-24, Olympic Stadium of Athens, Greece: This is an incident from the "Skin N' Bones" tour in Europe 1993, when GN'R were in Athens (Greece) for a gig. (1993-05-1993). GN'R were two hours late!! a bottle-war started suddenly. People threw bottles and cans on the stage and on eachother!! Someone from the crew picked up the microphone and said "stop this or else the show will be canceled!!". He runned to save his life because a hundred of bottles were following him!! in the middle of the set , the crew discovered an unauthorised tv crew which was videotaping the show. There was a little fight with the GN'R crew ,and finally they through the tv crew out of the venue, erasing the tape!!! also during the introduction of the band , when Axl introduced Izzy, the crowd kept yelling with enthusiasm for about ten minutes!!! at the end of the set, during "sweet child .." someone threw a coin at Axl. Fortunately he just said "some fuckers can go home" and continued the set! Thanx to: Fotis who sent this incident review. Also check out his concert review from this show.
