The world of soul is probably the most exciting to discover. "Millions" of brilliant songs was recorded in the 60's and 70's by well-knowned and not so well-knowned black artists. Many of the original records are impossible to buy, but now they are beginning to be available on CD. There is a number of compilations(a perfect starting point) and most of them are really great. The labels you should start looking for is Stax and Motown. Many of the biggest, greatest artists recorded for these.
