GUSTAF THEODOR WALLÉN

Selfportrait, watercolour, 1916

Wallén, Wallen and Walleaux - one man and one artist

Gustaf Th Wallén was a Swedish artist. Because of different reasons he also has been described as a French artist.
In 1892 he won a third gold medal for a painting at the Salon in Paris. The painting, called "La maison mortuaire" (The House of Mourning), was bought by the French Government. It was placed at the museum of art in Lyon, where Wallén wasn't pre-
sented as a Swede, but belonging to l´École Francaise.
Because of this presentation, and other reasons, he is today presented as two diffe-
rent artists in the French dictionary of art by E.Bénézit. First as the Swedish genre and portrait painter and sculptor Gustaf Theodor Wallén, and then as the genre painter J.T. Wallen belonging to l´École Francaise.
