YUSUF TABBAKH

 

Yusuf Tabbakh, a Swedish and Syrian citizenship holder, was born in Aleppo in 1945 in a large middle-class family. At five he was enrolled by the father to a Quran school, lead by a famous Sheikh- AHmad al-Hajjar- in the nearby mosque where he spent few month learning recitation.

Later, at the age of six, followed the public national school until he received the elementary school certificate, which entitled him to get enrolled in a national elementary school. Spending two years following the state curriculum at al- Ghazzali school, his older brother got him registered at  "Aleppo College"- the former American college in Aleppo.

Yusuf Tabbakh spent some twelve years at the college to receive a High School degree, which became invalid after the 1967 war. To maintain a valid degree entitling him to follow up a university degree received a Syrian Baccalaureate degree and got enrolled at the University of Damascus where he came in contact with the famous Syrian author Fadil al-Sibai who showed to be one of the foremost literary influences on him. 

In 1973, Yusuf Tabbakh, driven by personal interest immigrated to Sweden to reside in Stockholm. In Stockholm struggled for a living taking what so ever job until 1977 and after qualification in the Swedish Language he got enrolled at the University of Stockholm following the “Social worker” curriculum leading to a degree and Diploma. 

In Sweden followed studies in Psycho Therapy and later received the stipendium of Virgina Satir to follow up studies in Utah University and London. The interest of the psycho therapy and engagement in literature developed to get him follow up studies in Arabic Language and its literature at the university of Stockholm. a B.A and later M.A drove his interest to the research of the Rules of Scholar Disputation.

Translating Hemingway, tchekov, Moravia and other famous authorities in literature guided him to his first novel in 1971. Since then Yusuf Tabbakh published short stories, novel for the juvenile and translation of novels from Swedish into Arabic.

Yusuf Tabbakh is still an inhabitant of Sweden his contact with the Arabic roots has never been interrupted. This can easily  Although be traced in his literary production and the subjects he works on

Yusuf Tabbakh is married with  Juliette. Both have three children, Batoul-Fatima, Firas-Subhi and Wisam.
