GENERAL INFORMATIONFew military operations are as well known as the D-Day landings and the subsequent battle, including the Cobra breakout and the Falaise pocket. Thus it could be assumed that there is not much to add to the knowledge of the battle. Unfortunately this is not at all true. There still remain several large gaps in the knowledge about Normandy and the forces involved in the battle. This site is dedicated to efforts to fill them.As the reader can see, currently only a few of the subjects given to the left have links. Since the administrator of this site has recently had access to much of the archival material that remain from the German units that participated in the battle, focus will initially be to use that material to work out as complete order of battle as possible for the German units that participated in the battle. This will include organization, strength (men and equipment), when and where the unit was comitted and the status of the unit at various dates. Another important part will be the separate articles. These are intended to discuss various subjects concerning the Normandy Campaign. Some suggestions on topics are: Ä The effectiveness of air power for ground support Ä The role of the French Resistance Ä Tank and AT-Gun performance Ä Narratives of various engagements Ä Effectiveness of "Rommels Asparagus"and other defensive measures taken Ä Supply difficulties encountered Of course various other topics can be included. Those who want to write an article, or discuss some other kind of contribution, may contact the adminstrator, using the e-mail adress below. |
